Trustees are elected by voters in each municipality every 4 years during the municipal elections. Trustees are on the same ballot as your Mayor and Councilors. In my municipality, Cambridge and North Dumfries, here in Ontario, 3 Trustees are elected to sit at the board table for the Waterloo Region District School Board where there are a total of 11 Trustees from across the region.
It is sad to say, but too few people pay attention to the Trustee candidates, so I want to help people get a better understanding of what we do and why we do it.
And to be honest, our public education system is in crisis from underfunding and neglect. Many of us are worried that our government is quickly and quietly moving to greatly increase the privatization of the education. Privatization has a place in our democratic society, but education can not take a back seat to profits.
During the 2022 municipal elections the 5 Trustee associations in Ontario put together a website with resources for voters and candidates to learn about the important work that Trustees do to support our public education.
